NOLA ASB 2022 - Day 5: Celebrating Shabbat

Today we welcomed Shabbat in New Orleans at a local synagogue. Having grown up in the Tidewater area, my synagogue experiences had been limited to there and Hillel at Virginia Tech, but having the opportunity to come to Touro Synagogue here was a vastly different experience. The cultural differences were very interesting to witness and I enjoyed attending their services. Everything from the melodies to the style of leadership, including a rabbi playing the guitar, made for a meaningful experience. My time in New Orleans as a whole has been similarly fascinating as a history major as well, given the unique past of this city. My time here on Alternative Service Break has been memorable in every sense of the word, and I am grateful to Hillel for providing me with the opportunity. - Eitan Myers, Class of 2023
